Congregational Prayer (13):

Q1: Is it true that If the Jama'ah prayer is a few hundred feet away and I come into the prayer hall and the Imam is in ruku' I can do takbirah al Ihraam and go into ruku' from far away and walk in the state of ruku' to join the prayer leader?

A: When present in the place of congregational prayer, one can recite Tekbeeratul Ihram - even when not near the prayers – and walk even during prostration till joining the group.

Q2: Is it possible to join in the 4th raka'at of the Imam after ruku' has already been done? If so, how?

A: Yes, one can join after the last bow by reciting Tekbeeratul Ihram (Allahu Akbar) and follow the imam in prostration until the imam finishes his prayer. The individual continues without counting the prostration with the imam as part of the first raka'at and stands for his first raka’at without reciting Tekbeeratul Ihram again.

Q3: If I join prayer in the 2nd raka'at and the Imam does Qunoot may I do Qunoot with him?

A: Yes, it is permissible.

Q4: In my house which is very small, I don't have room to make 3 rows for prayers. Can I lead and have my wife and sons and daughters all pray in a single row behind me? We are all Adults.
Can my wife lead my sons in prayer?
Can a woman lead men in prayer.

A: Woman is not permitted to lead men in prayers It is permissible for your family to pray behind you in one row even if they were males and females. It is better for the female to stand slightly behind the male in such a way that her prostration place is level with the knee of the male.

Q5: A Person is an open or an exposed liar. The person has lied to me and also to public in general. Please let me know
1. If we can pray behind such a person(let him lead prayers)?
2. Should we listen to his majalis even after we know that he is an open liar?

A: It is unlawful to pray behind an unjust person. However, it is allowed to listen to his speeches unless it leads to other prohibition.

Q6: Can I follow a prayer leader, if I do not know that he is just (Adil)?

A: The prayer behind a person whose justice is not proven is void.

Q7: Who is a just person (Adil)?

A: A just person is a person who keeps away from sins and if s/he did then would repent and does not insist on committing the sin.

Q8: Can somebody who does not have correct Arabic pronounciation lead the congregational prayers? (for example, mixing up "saad" and "seen", the soft "ha" and the hard "ha" etc..)?

A: Yes, he is allowed to lead. Whoever can recite better is not permitted to pray behind him.

Q9: If a couple in the west are not officially married and has a child and they get married a year after. Can their child lead prayers since they where together but just not officially?

A: 1. If the parents were non Muslims when the drop of seed of the child was fertilized and if the relationship between them was legitimately recognized by their religion, then the child is considered from legitimate birth and can lead the prayers.
If the relationship was not religiously recognized in their religion, then he can not lead the prayers even after embracing Islam afterwards.
2. If the parents were Muslims when the drop of seed is fertilized and if the relationship was governed by a religious contract (that is if they performed verbally the marriage contract even if the state did not recognized it), then the child is recognized as a son religiously and then can lead the prayer.
If there was no religious contract, then the child is not from legitimate birth and then can not lead the prayers.

Q10: I know a child whose parents were not Muslims can not lead prayers when he grow up. But what if the father was a Muslim and the mother was christen, can he lead prayers if they were married before the child was born?

A: If the parents of the child were married - according to the religion that they follow - when the mother was pregnant with him, then he can lead the prayer when he grow up.
