Q [1]  What is the prohibition on eating fish [with scales] that is sold as frozen even though one is unaware that it is caught dead or alive?
If it is not known that the fish was caught alive, then it is prohibited to consume. Such knowledge could be obtained by learning about the ways of hunting, as they are generally by catching the fish alive from water.
Q [2]  Is it permissible to eat crab, lobster or prawn?
Amongst seafood, it is unlawful to consume anything but fish that have scales and shrimps and prawns.
Q [3]  While having a meal in restaurants, we are not sure about the fish having scales or not. Can we eat the fish without any investigation? If the waiter or the manager tells us that the fish has scales, can we believe him and eat the fish?
It is permissible to depend on whoever possesses the fish, if they have not been accused of lying.
Q [4]  What is the ruling on the following fish?
1. Pangasius.
2. Atlantic herring.
3. Cod.
4. Tuna.
5. European plaice.
6. European flounder.
7. Atlantic mackerel.
8. Brown trout
9. Atlantic salmon
10. Sardine
11. Pollock
Are they permissible to consume or not?
All kinds of fish that have scales on the skin, even if they were small, are permissible to consume. If they do not have scales then it is not permissible to consume them.
Q [5]  Is it permissible to eat colored fish?
If the fish has scales then it is permissible to consume it.
Q [6]  If scientists genetically modify a fish that has no scales originally to produce (give birth to) fish that have scales, will those fish with scales be permissible to eat?
It is prohibited to consume fish that does not have scales. It is permissible to consume fish that have scales even if they have them through genetic modification.
Q [7]  If one is buying spawn of fish which have scales, is it obligatory to know how the fish was caught (dead or alive)?
It is a condition in the permissibility of consuming the eggs of the fish that it is taken from the water alive. If purchasing the spawn is not for the purpose of eating them, then it is permissible to do so even if the fish was not taken from the water alive.
Q [8]  Artificial Crab is used in sushi food; is it halal to eat?
If the fish that is used in the making of such products is halal, it is permissible to consume such a product. If it is not then it is not permissible to consume it.
Q [9]  Why can’t we eat pork?
Because the Holy Quran stated its prohibition clearly when Almighty Allah said: “Forbidden unto you (for food) are carrion and blood and swine flesh, and that which hath been dedicated unto any other than Allah, and the strangled, and the dead through beating, and the dead through falling from a height, and that which hath been killed by (the goring of) horns…” (The Holy Quran 5:3)
Q [10]  Is pork gelatin lawful to consume?
It is not permissible to consume pork or anything that is extracted from it.
